WORK

Mim Best is a Bristol-based contemporary jewellery designer whose work explores traditional handcrafting techniques, mark-making, pattern, and texture. Each piece is unique, carefully considered, and meticulously handworked to create a future heirloom of exquisite quality.

Her designs draw inspiration from the rich visual language of ancient jewellery, decorative details, surface textures, and the therapeutic nature of making by hand. Combining lost-wax casting with traditional fabrication techniques, she brings a thoughtful, yet playful approach to her practice. She often stamps the metal to create unique, shimmering patterns - blending modern and ancient aesthetics into timeless, elegant pieces.

Using recycled silver and gold, her work features carefully selected gemstones and tiny beads with unusual cuts and vibrant colours, chosen for their quality and provenance.

Since launching her own collection in 2019, Mim has focused on creating small-batch jewellery and bespoke commissions that honour personal stories and mark meaningful moments. Alongside her main collections, she offers a full remodelling and custom design service by appointment, specialising in one-of-a-kind pieces. Her recent work centres on the alternative bridal market and custom engagement rings, working closely with clients to create distinctive, symbolic jewellery designed to be treasured for generations.

MY STORY

From a very young age, I was fascinated by jewellery - not just as decoration, but as an ancient, universal art form. I’ve always been drawn to its intricate, miniature world and the way it carries stories and meaning across time and culture.

I grew up in a creative household in the West Midlands - the daughter of an artist and a model-maker. Our home was full of materials, tools, and handmade things, and I was always encouraged to experiment and create. Through the process of playing and watching what Mum was doing, I developed a trained eye quite early on. I was always really focused on the details and everything had to be neat, tidy, and precise. That early environment fostered a love of materials and making that has shaped my entire life.

I studied Applied Arts at Derby University, specialising in mixed-media jewellery, and after graduating in 1998, I moved to Bristol and began working with the award-winning jeweller Diana Porter. Over the next 20 years, I honed my bench skills and developed a deeper understanding of the industry.

Alongside my jewellery career, I’ve also worked as a model-maker and set painter, collaborating on creative projects with Aardman Animations (Wallace and Gromit), PJ Harvey, and the BBC. These experiences gave me a broader spectrum of knowledge and a fresh perspective on my own creative practise.

In 2019, I launched my own jewellery collection using recycled silver and gold. My passion lies in working alongside my clients to create one-of-a-kind pieces that feel personal, symbolic, and timeless. Since launching my work has been widely exhibited across the UK and has gathered a loyal following.

In 2024, I was honoured to be selected for the Goldsmiths’ Centre SHINE programme, which supports emerging voices in jewellery and silversmithing. It marked a new chapter in my journey - one that continues to be shaped by curiosity, craftsmanship, and a deep love of making.
